Ts'ai Ch'ien 蔡乾 was born in 1908 in Changhua near Taichung, Taiwan (Formosa). His father was an accountant in a rice shop and a descendant of the three hundred Fukienese families who went to Taiwan with Koxinga, who led a rebellion there against the Manchus. At the age of six Ts'ai Ch'ien entered primary school, studied Japanese, and graduated after eight years.
