On Friday night, three men came into Mr White's hotel and asked for rooms.

They also invited Snow White's godless stepmother.

In the chess game better known as the "Immortal", White's Anderssen allowed his opponent, Kieseritzky, to take a bishop, the two rooks, and finally the queen, but this allowed Anderssen to give him check-mate at e7 with his two knights and the black-squared bishop.

Using the algebraic notation system, each square on the board is identified by a letter and a number. The letters – from “a” to “h”, left to right of white's player – correspond to the vertical lines (columns). The numbers – from 1 to 8, also from the position of white – correspond to the horizontal lines (rows). For example, a checker on c5 is in the encounter of the 3rd column with the 5th row.

If a black stone occupies the last freedom of a white stone, the latter is captured and removed from the board. That capture will be a point to be deducted from White's final count.

Black responded to White's attack on the kingside by counterattacking in the center.
