Etymology

From Spanish Guadalcanal. The Pacific island was named in 1568 by Álvaro de Mendaña, after his hometown of Guadalcanal, Spain. From Arabic وَادِي الْخَانَات (wādī l-ḵānāt, “Valley of the Stalls”).
