Etymology
From Middle French adjouter (modern French ajouter), from Old French ajoster, from Vulgar Latin *adiuxtāre. The spelling was perhaps reinforced by folk-etymological association with Classical Latin adiūtō (“to help”) (which Samuel Johnson gives as the etymology and meaning). Possibly a doublet of adjust.
