Etymology

Humorous alteration of anime, with -u probably based on a stereotypical Japanese accent or wasei-eigo, emphasizing the added /ɯ/ vowel which frequently occurs on Japanese borrowings from English words that phonetically end in a consonant (such as チーズ (chīzu) from cheese (/t͡ʃiːz/); a few of these are reborrowed into English and commonly used in anime fandoms, such as waifu), but of course misapplied in this case.
