- 2 A municipality and village in Schwyz canton, Switzerland. countable, uncountable
Etymology
* As a German surname, variant of Art, for which see Artman, or otherwise related to Ort (“point, end”). * The place in Switzerland is from Middle High German ze Arth, from Old High German Arta, which is said mean to something like "plowed land," from an obsolete derivative of Proto-Germanic *arþrą (“plow”). However, compare *ardiz (“nature, character”), the source of Old English eard (“homeland, dwelling, land”).
