Etymology

From bone + seed, either directly as a description of the hard surface of the seeds, or indirectly as a calque of the name of its genus, Osteospermum, from Ancient Greek ὀστέον (ostéon, “bone”) + Ancient Greek σπέρμα (spérma, “seed”).
