Etymology
First attested in 1651; borrowed from Latin dēspūmātus, perfect passive participle of dēspūmō (see -ate (verb-forming suffix)), from dē- + spūmō (“to foam, froth”), spūma (“foam, froth, scum”) + -ō. Doublet of despume.
