From Middle English eschele, from Old French eschele, eschelle, esciele, eskiele, variants of Old French esquiere, scare ( > modern French échauguette), from Frankish *skaru, from Proto-Germanic *skarō (“a portion, share, division, troop”). Cognate with German Schar. Doublet of share.
