The atonal pinyin romanization of the Mandarin pronunciation of Chinese 黃浦 /黄浦 (Huángpǔ, literally “Yellow Bank”), a clipping of 黃歇浦 /黄歇浦 (Huáng Xiē pǔ, literally “Huang Xie Bank”), named in honor of Lord Chunshen, a statesman of the Kingdom of Chu during the Warring States Era closely associated with Songjiang and Shanghai.
