Proper Noun
- 1 A region to the south of Karelia in what is now Russia.
Etymology
From New Latin, from Old Swedish Ingermanland. The name could be related to Inger, Inkere (possibly related to Eastern Mari эҥер (eŋer, “river”), names for the Izhora river, a tributary of the Neva, itself named after the Finnic people, the Izhorians. Or, named after Ingegerd Olofsdotter of Sweden, a Swedish princess and Grand princess of Kiev (though this has been dismissed as folk etymology); for the name see Ingegerd.
