From Classical Mongolian ᠬᠠᠨᠪᠠᠯᠢᠺ (qanbalik), from Middle Mongol ᠬᠠᠨᠪᠠᠯᠢᠺ (qanbalik, “City of the Khan”), from ᠬᠠᠭᠠᠨ (qaɣan) + ᠪᠠᠯᠢᠺ (balik), both possibly from Old Turkic. Compare Mongolian Ханбалиг (Xanbalig).
