Etymology

Originally from Old English Cingesburg, &c., from cyninges (“king's”) + burh (“fort, manor, town”). Later derived from earlier places named Kingsbury and from people bearing the surname. Equivalent to king's -bury. Doublet of Kingsburg, Kingsburgh, and Conisbrough. Cf. Kingstown, Kingston, Kingsville, Coniston, Conington, and Queensbury.
