First attested in 1814; borrowed from Latin nīdificātus, perfect passive participle of nīdificō (see -ate (verb-forming suffix)), from nīdus (“a nest, dwelling of animals”) + -ficō (“to make, build”). Doublet of nidify and cognate with French nidifier.
