Etymology

From Middle English pygyn, from pig (“container for wine”), possibly so named from being made of pigskin. Compare Scottish Gaelic pigean, diminutive of pigeadh, pige (“an earthen jar, pitcher, or pot”), Irish pigín, Welsh picyn.
