From Middle English squaimous, queimous, swaymos, sweymows, partly from Anglo-Norman escoimus, escoymous, of unknown origin (possibly from the English); and partly from Middle English sweme, sweyme, swayme, sqweme (“sorrow, grief, unconsciousness, dizzy spell, faintness”) + -ous.
