Etymology

From the Mandarin pronunciation of Chinese 楊浦 /杨浦 (Yángpǔ, literally “Poplar Bank”), a 1950 clipping of earlier 楊樹浦 /杨树浦 (Yángshùpǔ, literally “Poplar Tree Bank”), after the name of a creek that formerly ran through the area beside present-day Lanzhou Rd.
