If you don't personally know a Gmailer who'll invite you onboard, fire up Google itself and search for Gmail invitations, which should generate results with plenty of sites that dispense spare Gmail accounts...

If you do that, the photo appears when another Gmailer hovers the cursor over your name in his inbox or Contacts list.
