On October 18, 1963, French scientists launched the first cat into space on a Veronique AGI sounding rocket No. 47. The cat, named Félicette, was successfully retrieved after a parachute descent.

There are some things about which I am pondering: Is the potential threat of Artificial Intelligence to humanity just "geek anxiety" or is it real? Is chat with AI like an oracle with psychic influence? There is some "dice-rolling" in the way the AI makes sentences in whatever language. Will AGI or Artificial General Intelligence have psychic attributes, as do some humans? Will a "soul" exist in intelligent machines? I have recollections as a boy: I stirred powdered chocolate in a cup, and the moving powder on the water I imagined to be plate tectonics. I swooped my hand or paper plane in a lush tropical garden and over misty horizontal freezers, as I imagined my hand or paper plane to be a flitting spaceship over an alien planet.

AGIs will indeed be capable of self-awareness – but that is because they will be General: they will be capable of awareness of every kind of deep and subtle thing, including their own selves.

If AI researchers do eventually manage to make the leap to AGI, there is little reason to believe that the result will be a machine that simply matches human-level intelligence.

In the beginning, this level of secrecy was never the intention, but it has since become habitual. Over time, the leadership has moved away from its original belief that openness is the best way to build beneficial AGI.

Some of my friends have recently reported to me that when people outside the AI industry hear about extinction risk from Artificial General Intelligence for the first time, their reaction is “maybe we should not build AGI, then.”

Some experts believe that truly transformative implications, including artificial general intelligence (AGI) enabling AI to perform essentially all human tasks, could be around the corner.

Yet the narrative that A.G.I. is just around the corner and will usher in “massive prosperity,” as Mr. Altman has written, is already leading companies to accrue large amounts of capital, lay claim to data and electricity and build enormous data centers that are accelerating the climate crisis.
