This state of things is no doubt more or less typical, since we have reason to presume a second stage (pre-genital) of anal-sadistic interest between the narcissistic and genital stages of development.

Psycho-analytic experience has already obliged us to assert the existence of a pre-genital, anal-sadistic stage of libidinal development;

It indicates a fixation at the pregenital anal-sadistic level and signifies a precocious development of the super-ego during this phase of libidinal evolution.
