Anti-soccer

There were many concerns as to whether soccer players were being sufficiently disciplined. In Brazil, Lima Barreto and Carlos Sussekind de Mendonça promoted drill and rote training as part of their antisoccer campaign.

Clodoaldo condemned the “inefficiency” and “lack of heart” he saw, especially in the midfield. Shockingly, the country of Pelé and the beautiful game had fallen into playing antisoccer—that is, trying to destroy the opponent's game with little thought of putting together effective attacks.⁸⁷
