Assayor

Assay laboratory, consisting of a verificator of assay and two assayors.

The dyed cloths are then washed, dried, and carefully weighed, after which the value of the woad which is being tested is fixed by the assayors, who must meanwhile be closeted alone and in a private apartment, so as to avoid any risk of undue pressure or bribery.

Do theologians own the faith? No, not by themselves. Rather they might be compared to prospectors, or miners who go out looking for treasures. Or they can be viewed as assayors who evaluate what has been found.
