Autogreet

An example of a more subtle indiscretion is using an "autogreet". This involves automatically sending a 'hello' message to everyone on a channel whenever you join (the IRC Primer warns against creating an autogreet, stating that "even if you think you are being polite, you are actually sounding insincere and also interfering with the personal environment of the recipient" (Pioch 1993:2)).

DON'T use autogreets, or automatic messaging, to say "Hello" and "Goodbye" automatically as people enter or leave the channel. They get old, and you may not really mean what you say.
