Bambi

Deer graze the lawns of the historic estate at Wawona and of the golf course across the road. Remember that these graceful “Bambis” are wild animals with sharp hooves and antlers.

But mostly I saw herds of white-spotted deer called chital, gentle Bambis whose sweet vulnerability makes them key players in the forest drama.

Gore’s dad took him deer-hunting, says aide Jano Cabrero, but didn’t know if the veep ever bagged a Bambi.

Instead of lounging on a sandy beach, Björk and Barney split their time between Iceland and New York, where Barney has an apartment downtown and Björk owns a house upstate “in the forest, with the Bambis.”

Parents today, apparently, don’t want their kids out in the wilds, where they might walk in the paths of potentially tick-bearing Bambis.

In nature, predators limit deer populations, but the top predator in these parts won’t put up with wolves or other deer-killers — and urban liberal sensibilities quail at just shooting the Bambis.

“I saw seven deer last night and a couple of baby Bambis,” he said about his route home.
