Bisphenol A — or BPA — is a common chemical used to make tough, shatter-resistant plastic.

Researchers analysed samples of nurdles and burnt lumps of plastic from four Sri Lankan beaches for heavy metals and various chemicals, including benzotriazole UV-stabilisers, which are used to prevent discoloration in plastics, bisphenols and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

“Don’t touch this,” she says, explaining that most paper receipts contain a “toxic” chemical called bisphenol A, or BPA, which is easily absorbed through the skin and linked to health issues like infertility, hormone imbalances and certain cancers.
