Cassini

Giovanni Cassini (1625-1712) was the first to observe four of Saturn’s moons, including Iapetus.

The Cassini spacecraft went into orbit around Saturn in July 2004. It will study the planet, its ring system, and many of its moons for at least 4 years.

The Cassini spacecraft ended its mission on Sept. 15, 2017.

The Cassini mission is a cooperative project of NASA, ESA (the European Space Agency) and the Italian Space Agency.

Cassini first confirmed the presence of liquid ethane in a lake called Ontario Lacus, in Titan’s southern hemisphere, during its 2008 flyby of the Saturnian moon.

From afar, Saturn's rings look like a solid, homogenous disk of material, but upon closer examination from Cassini, we see that there are varied structures in the rings at almost every scale imaginable.
