Cast-netter

On fall mornings before sunrise, cast netters on Mobile Bay's eastern shore piers often are rewarded with good catches of white shrimp.

To use odunka, the 6-m radius (yes, radius) cast net for Ethmalosa, requires a narrow, more manœuverable canoe than ali, carrying one cast-netter standing in the bow and a crew of 4–5 paddlers astern.

The cast netter's shoes crunch on the shell wash, and when his net connects with the water, there is the sound of plopping and splash.
