Columnstore

The HPDB is the functional repository for time-series market data. Unlike a standard database, which reads rows of data, HPDBs are columnstore databases.

In order to achieve optimal performance, PolyBase is capable of dynamically creating columnstore tables, parallalizing data extraction from Hadoop and Azure sources, or pushing computations on Hadoop-based data to Hadoop clusters where necessary.

When first introduced, batch mode execution was closely integrated with the columnstore storage format.
