Crossed-eyed

Among the worshippers at this wayside meeting house was an elderly woman who to use the expressive vernacular, skenned some some'at awful; in other words she was very much crossed-eyed.

By "crossed-eyed" I mean one salutes a crossed-eyed man in the street under the belief that he is looking at you, but finds that his gaze is on the opposite side of the road.
