Smetana's romantic comedy epitomizes one stereotype of Czechness: happy villagers in quaint peasant garb, dancing polkas and skocnas in the local pub while singing hymns in praise of beer.

"I want people to find my work more European than specifically Czech, but I can't deny the Czechness present in my writing," he said.
