Vaginal discharge should be looked for, the smell noted and swabs (high vaginal or endocervical) obtained for examination by microscopy and inoculations for micro-organisms are obtained. Bleeding, products of conception in the cervical canal or cervical pathology (e.g. ectopion) should be excluded.
