Electrolytic

An electrolytic cell is a type of electrochemical cell in which the flow of electric energy from an external source enables a redox reaction.

The show also features the Soil Lamp, by another Dutch designer, Marieke Staps, that operates on the electrolytic energy contained in damp soil enclosed in copper and zinc cells. Only a splash of water now and then is needed to "recharge" the soil.

However, approaching energisation, electrolytic corrosion was discovered between the copper contact wire and aluminium beams in the tunnel. The corrosion was caused by the dissimilar metals. An aluminium contact wire system which prevents electrolytic corrosion was subsequently developed, tested and adopted within a year, and replaced the earlier copper installation.
