Take Rep. George Mahon, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, a reasonable, responsible conservative Democrat. ▪ In economics, Ford settled on his base premise early on: that inflation was more ruinous to more people than recession and that it could be contained only at the cost of some pain in added unemployment. His rare candor in saying so has won him high marks, even among liberals who object to his policies.
