Hoiping

Towards the end of the decade a movement was set on foot to construct a railway from Hoiping (開平) to Yeungkong (陽江), and a prospectus, under the auspices of the promoters, the mercantile Ning-Yeung Railway Company (甯陽鐵路公司) has been issued with a view to collecting the necessary capital.

In 1851 the Cantonese from the Kwangtung Three Districts of Namhoi, Punyu, and Shuntak organized the Sam Yup Company. By year’s end, men from the Four Districts of Sunwui, Sunning, Yanping, and Hoiping organized the Sze Yap (sometimes See Yup) Company.
