Some years ago the hôteliers of Mentone came to the conclusion that its reputation as a consumptive resort interfered with its development as compared with those winter stations on the Riviera where invalids were less numerous.

One of the most important things for a hôtelier to realize is that he must personally watch every details—especially details of table service.

The wine-growing peasants, especially in the cantons of Vaud, Neuchâtel and Valais, together with the powerful pressure group of the hôteliers, succeeded in blocking this tax when it was brought forward in the Swiss Parliament in 1951.

Having failed to put the regiment in its place, the lodge was acutely embarrassed when the hôtelier who had led the campaign was shortly afterwards faced with prosecution for travelling on an expired railway season ticket that belonged to someone else.

Only tourists looking for cheap lodgings were frowned upon by the new hôtelier.
