Jangal

In the dense jangal of the kāchār lands, to which the refugee Zamīndārs resort, nīl-gā'es are met with, but no tigers, it is said.

The lake also has the appearance of having once been much larger than it is now; and in ancient times, when there was much jangal and marshy land in that part of the country, and the rivers and lakes contained much more water than they do now, there is no doubt that the Marawa lake must have been more extensive than at present and the expanse of water must have been more permanent and equable; and then, in that case, the water of the lake must have reached up to within a very short distance of the stûpa at Râmpur.

The fact that the jangal contains sacred forests and many deities helps ensure that the Rais and Sherpas will carefully protect its resources.
