This question was the topic of a very unsatisfactory Irish television debate in 1964, which paid too much attention to the Italianate statues and holy pictures of the nineteenth-century devotional revolution and the supposed infusion of Victorian values to explain the notorious killjoyism of Irish Catholicism.
