Laterisation

Rain forest soils arise rather from the co-existence of the two extreme processes of soil formation in humid regions—podsolisation and laterisation, leaching of sesquioxides and silica respectively,–but laterisation greatly predominates.

Laterisation involves the deposition of a hard layer of metallic oxides (called latarite) in the A horizon.
