Using the relatively new term "queer" and the acronym "LGBTQA" (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, allies) was itself a challenge to the established leadership of the community.

In Chapter 7, we learned that the A in LGBTQA referred to allies—heterosexual individuals who support and identify with, and are accepted by, members of sexual minority groups.

Take, for example, a study conducted in the United States by Riggle, Gonzalez, Rostosky, and Black (2014) which focused on young adults that are identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, and allies (LGBTQA).
