The traditional teaching is that cancer is associated with microcalcification, while benign breast disease is associated with macrocalcification.

Microcalcification induces inflammation and promotes plaque rupture, whereas macrocalcification which refers to the sheet-like appearance of calcification acts as a barrier to inflammation and stabilizes the plaque [40 ,41 ].
