Malplacement

A little consideration of the effects of malfiguration of the pivots, malplacement of the axis in the circle, &c., will make it evident that, if these errors follow any distinct and simple law, all their effects must go through their periods while θ is increased by 360°, and that some of them may go through their periods twice or thrice in the same time, but that none of them will go through their periods any fractional number of times with that increase of θ.

The innumerable gradations of malplacements from the almost imperceptible slip to the complete dislocation, the numerous possible curvatures and the various arthritic effects comprise a tremendous field.
