Mom-and-pop stores gave up ground to a new generation of megaretailers, most of which look pretty much alike. Yet, through it all, one grocery retailer managed to survive—and flourish—by being different.

To reignite growth, the megaretailer is pushing into new, faster-growing product and service lines, including organic foods, in-store health clinics, and consumer financial services.
