It would be merely feckless to frame American choices about China on the Micawberesque hope that something will turn up, or that China will turn down.

Within the Murdstone and Grinby period, for all its miseries, David on occasion shows glimpses of a Micawberesque sprightliness - notably when he goes to order himself a celebratory glass of the best ale: '...just draw me a glass of the Genuine Stunning, if you please, with a good head to it'.
