Each incision can be aided by first "scoring" the ectoderm repeatedly (3-10 times) by dragging the cutting tip of the microscalpel along the surface (Fig. 2B).

To stain photoreceptors of the dorsal rim area, the cornea and crystalline cone layer of the DRA were removed using a microscalpel.
