Misacquisition

Is there any justification (other than the inevitability of some errors) for billion-dollar misacquisitions, such as Exxon's purchase of Reliance Electric or Sohio's purchase of Kennecott?

As learning proceeds, a good teacher is always vigilant for misacquisitions—learning the correct answer but not understanding the underlying concept.
