When choosing mushroom species to mycoremediate a toxic site, select species that naturally grow in that landscape.

The findings of that work could help mycoremediate the oil sands tailings in the Fort McMurray area of northern Alberta.

Due to the fungi's ability to deactivate and mycoremediate toxins, the environment is not affected negatively.
