We were on the top of the hotel on Nob Hill, above Chinatown and North Beach, looking out over the night-bright city, all the way to the dark waters of the Bay.

Beyond the weeds and the old pier, she saw the river water black in the night and, suddenly, out in the middle, the river turning into a silver fire that ran with dazzling impact up to the foot of the night-bright buildings on the Manhattan side.
