Oat-like

This grass is very similar to the preceding in its economic characters, but it requires a more humid soil ; when it meets with such a soil, it yields a larger produce than common oat-like grass.

Farm-yard manure, which increased the actual amount and proportion of total graminaceous herbage, gave a considerably increased proportion of rye-grass and of tall oat-like grass; a somewhat diminished proportion of the woolly soft-grass; scarcely any of the other grasses found on the unmanured plot; but a very large amount o fthe valuable smooth-stalked meadow-grass, which was not found at all in the produce without manure.

The Chief told us they contained an oat-like meal, sweet potatoes, and kettle bread.
