Ophiolatrous

In fact, the legend associated with the founding of Mandi town, as symbolised by this composition, had definite ophiolatrous background, as we find elsewhere in the Western Himalayan region about the founding of many temples, in which a snake, a cow, a cowherd and a lingam are the essential characters.
