Periaxonal

An essential step in Schwann cell myelination, therefore, is formation and maintenance of physical contact between the Schwann cell periaxonal membrane and axolemma.

The exact mechanism is not yet fully understood but it seems that oligodendrocytes might provide the axons with metabolites across the soma and cytoplasm near the periaxonal space underneath the myelin sheath.
